Between social media feeds, videogaming, AI chats, online gambling, and all the app notifications, it's easy to feel like digital devices are out of our control at home. Parents come in worried about their child who’s struggling in school, unmotivated or lost interest in after-school activities. At home, their child has problems sleeping, eating, being active. When screens get in the way of your child’s health, you know you need to help them but you don’t know how, especially in a fast paced online world. Raising children in this digital age is a unique struggle that only parents today can really understand. It quicky overwhelms us and burns us out. In our work together, we slow down and look at what's driving your concerns with your child’s behavior, not just the behavior itself. I meet you where you are and together we make a family media plan that builds healthier habits and sets realistic goals around screen use at home. About Selma Hi, I'm Selma (she/her). I’m a San Francisco (born and raised) Digital Native who has experienced technology’s impact on childhood firsthand. I grew up on dial-up, Myspace, and burning CDs of pirated music. Cellphones made calls, no one texted. Later, I got my college on Facebook because it hadn’t been added yet. When everyone got a smartphone, I got a Blackberry. It wasn’t until decades later that I realized I, like many, had become addicted and dependent on my smartphone. Professionally, I spent my career at the intersection of youth mental health and the everchanging digital world they are growing up in. I began my clinical work supporting at-risk youth, neurodivergent children, and tech start-up clients in SF greater Bay Area. Today, I work with teens and their families to help them navigate issues that are more common than people realize — phone addiction, toxic relationships, health concerns, substance use, risky behavior, online bullying, and more. A particular focus of mine is supporting and guiding parents on their personalized journey to a healthy relationship with screen use at home. I draw on an adaptable approach blending family systems, strength-based, and trauma-informed frameworks with motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral techniques — to meet each client where they are at. Outside of my therapy practice, I am an active advocate for youth mental health in a digital age. I facilitate parent workshops, I speak at school board meetings and press conferences the CA State Capitol about the harmful effects of technology on children and learning. I am committed to affirming, culturally responsive care for LGBTQ+, BIPOC and addicts in recovery. - Our Process | EMERGE CENTER
Explore therapy fees at Emerge for individual, family, and couples sessions, as well as group therapy options. We offer affordable rates, accept Medi-Cal for adolescent groups, and provide payment flexibility through check or credit card. Learn more about EAP and insurance and/or superbilling options. OUR PROCESS Whether our first contact is by email, phone or text, we will arrange some time to talk with you to better understand your needs. We will discuss treatment options and whether we have a therapist that is a good fit for you. If not, we are happy to recommend other providers. Assessment Session(s) The first 1-3 sessions are the assessment phase of therapy. We gather as much information as possible about your concerns, their history and what you have tried to address them. During this process, we will discuss our impressions of your situation and recommend a course of treatment and/or action. While it is hard to predict how treatment progress because there are so many variables, we will give you some idea of what to expect going forward. Ongoing Process and Feedback Assuming that your treatment involves ongoing sessions, the therapist will check in with you frequently to ensure that your concerns are being met. Discussing the process of therapy with you directly is not only good customer service, it is an essential ingredient of good therapy. Ending Therapy While it is your decision alone to end therapy, it is useful to discuss this openly as part of the therapeutic process for several reasons: If there are any concerns about your therapy, we may be able to address them The process of ending is a way to review progress on your goals and plan for the future Being thoughtful about ending can help us think about other options for your continued growth While therapy can go on indefinitely as a personal growth process, this should be a well thought out choice after specific areas of concern have been addressed.
